Madera County deputy fatally shoots suspect after chase, confrontation with K-9

UPDATE: The suspect fatally shot by a deputy was identified Friday by the Madera County Sheriff’s Office as Madera County resident Artemio Mondragon Alfaro, 29.

“Alfaro had active felony warrants for domestic violence and violating probation. Deputies had also been searching to arrest him for charges of robbery, and violating a domestic violence protection order,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The Madera Police Department is handling the shooting investigation.

Anyone who witnessed anything connected to the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 559-675-7770 or Valley Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP.

ORIGINAL STORY: A man wanted on charges of domestic violence and robbery was shot and killed by a Madera County Sheriff’s deputy on Wednesday after a short chase ended in a confrontation.

Officers received information around 1:20 p.m. of a suspect in the area of Avenue 7 and Highway 145, about 8 miles south of the city of Madera.

Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney said the suspect fled when deputies arrived, and a pursuit followed with speeds reaching as fast as 110 mph.

The suspect eventually stopped near Avenue 6 and Road 20 north of the San Joaquin River and tried to flee on foot. That’s when deputies used a K-9 to apprehend the man.

But the suspect managed to get back in his vehicle all while a dog attacked him.

Varney said the suspect began backing up his vehicle and knocked over a deputy.

“At that point,” Varney said, “there was an additional altercation and shots were fired.”

It is unclear how many shots were fired by the deputy and if the suspect fired shots, too.

Varney said deputies attempted CPR on the suspect and paramedics arrived later and attempted advanced life support.

The suspect, whose name or age was not released, died at the scene.

He was wanted for robbery, vandalism, domestic violence and probation violation, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy who was hit by the vehicle received medical attention on scene and did not suffer any major injury. The K-9 that engaged with the suspect was not injured.
