Detective seriously injured in Oakhurst officer-involved shooting

A Madera County Sheriff’s detective was seriously injured during an altercation with a suspect that prompted the officer to shoot the man Thursday morning in downtown Oakhurst.

The shooting took place about 10 a.m. after the detective responded to a report of a person acting erratically on Highway 41 between Road 426 and Highway 49, according to Undersheriff Tyson Pogue.

The detective, who works out of the Oakhurst substation, was rushed to an area hospital and released in the late afternoon. He is recovering at home.

The suspect, a 32-year-old man, has an extensive criminal history, Pogue said.

The suspect was airlifted to a Fresno hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Both a criminal and an administrative investigation are underway.
