Police chase leads to fatal crash. The person who died wasn’t the fleeing suspect

A suspect driving in a Ford Mustang tried fleeing from officers on Thursday and instead caused a head-on collision that killed a man in central Fresno, police said.

According to Lt. Bill Dooley, officers around 3:30 p.m. stopped the driver of a red Mustang in the area of Fresno Street and Olive Avenue.

After officers noticed a gun inside the vehicle, the suspect sped off going east on Olive.

UPDATE: Fresno police say gun found in fatal pursuit may be linked to prior shootings

Police chased the Mustang from a distance, Dooley said.

As officers traveled past Cedar Avenue, they observed the fleeing vehicle swerve into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with a black truck.

The man driving the truck was killed at the scene.

The suspect fled the crash but was eventually arrested in a nearby neighborhood.

Information on the suspect and victim was not immediately released as officers continued their investigation.
