One teen killed, another hurt in suspected street racing crash on Fresno-area foothill highway
One teenager died and another was seriously injured in a suspected street racing crash Wednesday afternoon on Highway 168 east of Auberry, the California Highway Patrol said.
Officers were alerted to the crash between Vista Point and Beal Fire Road at 2:25 p.m.
CHP spokesman Mike Salas said three vehicles were racing at speeds around 85 mph to 100 mph downhill near the top of the four-lane section of the highway.
The 17-year-old boy driving one of the vehicles, a 1996 Acura Integra, crashed into the mountainside. Both the driver and his juvenile female passenger were wearing seat belts, Salas said, but the force of the impact caused both to be ejected from the car. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
CHP said the drivers of the other two vehicles stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected. The investigation is ongoing.
