Victim shot to death at southwest Fresno home identified as Madera man

A man shot to death in the front yard of a southwest Fresno home Sunday afternoon was identified Monday by Fresno police as Eustasio Mendoza, 37, of Madera.

According to Lt. Anthony Dewall, just before 5 p.m. officers received a call of shots fired in the area of San Joaquin Street and Thorne Avenue.

When officers arrived they found Mendoza with gunshot wounds in the front yard of home. Officers began to perform life-saving measures before taking him to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers learned Mendoza was in the yard when some kind of disturbance took place that led to the shooting. A man and a woman were seen with Mendoza in the front yard, but police are unsure how they were involved.

Lt. Larry Bowlan of the department’s Street Violence Bureau said Mendoza was unarmed and not involved in any criminal activity at the time of the shooting.

This homicide was the fifth in Fresno in 2020, compared to eight at this time in 2019.

Anyone with information about the slaying is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
