Fresno Police Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega said the driver was traveling east on Ventura Avenue when he collided with another vehicle at B Street. He did not stop and continued east, striking a second vehicle at C Street.
The vehicle then left the roadway, went off the Highway 99 embankment, veered to the right, became airborne, overturned and landed on the highway.
It came to rest in the No. 1 lane near the center divide.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
Lawyer Carter, whose vehicle was struck, said he was traveling with his family toward Kings Canyon when the collision occurred.
“I was just checking on my granddaughter and making sure everybody is OK,” Carter said. “I didn’t even see the car. I didn’t know it flipped over, but it hit us and went that way. It happened so fast. The car came out of nowhere.”
The following areas are blocked off as police investigate: C street at Highway 99, off ramps at Highway 99/C Street, southbound off ramp highway 99/Ventura and three southbound lanes southbound 99 traffic congested and backed up.
Only one lane is open.
