Big construction plans surround Clovis Recreation Center. Here’s what we know
Construction next to the Clovis Recreation Center is generating curiosity.
Is that a new baseball diamond being built? Softball complex? Football field?
Actually, the project at the northeast corner of Clovis and Dakota avenues has nothing to do with sports or other activities held at the Clovis Rec Center.
In fact, the land that the new development is being built on and isn’t associated with Clovis Rec.
So what’s being built?
According to approved planning applications with the City of Clovis, the corner of Clovis and Dakota avenues will soon become a couple of things.
At the direct corner next to the intersection, a Street Corner Urban Market gas station and convenience store is being built.
And just behind the gas station will be a 15,300-square foot medical office building that is part of the United Health Centers of the San Joaquin Valley.
There’s also an even bigger development on the horizon.
Behind the Clovis Rec Center (east of the building) is 26 acres of currently undeveloped land.
According to the City of Clovis active projects viewer, that stretch of land is all expected to become part of a church.
No word yet what type of church.
No construction appears to have occurred yet on this neighboring side of the rec center. And it’s not clear when that would begin.
For now, it’s simply worth noting more development is expected in the area.
Street Corner Urban Market
The project to open a Street Corner Urban Market convenience store and gas station has been in the works since 2022.
Street Corner Urban Market touts itself as “emphasizing quality, freshness, cleanliness, and value combined with forward-thinking technology.”
The store is expected to carry a wide range of everyday essentials.
“But the spotlight will be a variety of totally unique, freshly-prepared grab-and-go sandwiches, pizzas and salads,” Street Corner posted on its website. “All served in a welcoming “fast casual” environment.”
Urban Market further strives to fill the marketplace gap “between large-scale grocery stores and tiny convenience stores.”
Also, among its technological features that Street Corner Urban Market highlights is providing customers who are getting gasoline an option to order food from the gas station pump.
It was not immediately known when the Street Corner Urban Market was expected to be completed.
This will become the second Street Corner Urban Market in the Fresno area. The other location is at Campus Pointe near Shaw and Chestnut avenues.
United Health Centers
This will become the third United Health Centers located in Clovis, with locations already established near the intersection of Herndon and Temperances avenue, and Shaw and Peach avenues.
United Health Centers, which originated in Parlier, is a private, non-profit organization that provides medical, dental and community health services.
In particular, the centers help serve the medically underserved in the central San Joaquin Valley, such as the local agricultural and farmworkers.
United Health Centers has grown significantly in the past 14 years, expanding from eight health centers in 2012 to 42 locations presently around the Valley.
It also was not immediately known when the Street Corner Urban Market was expected to be completed.
Both the convenience store and medical offices are being developed by Legacy Stone Works.
