The Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the Selma man killed in a collision on Highway in Fresno on Sunday as 31-year-old Carlos Sandoval.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash at 2:25 a.m. on southbound Highway 41, near Highway 180. Reports indicated that Sandoval was driving a Toyota Camry south on 41 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle stopped in the No. 2 lane.

CHP then said a 33-year-old Fresno woman driving a Kia Optima south in the same lane crashed into the rear of the Toyota.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control before coming to rest in the far right and far left lanes of the highway.

CHP said a 3-year-old child riding in the Kia was restrained with a seat belt but was not secured in a child safety seat.

CHP said the child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

In an update Monday, CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the child was in critical condition and that a passenger in the Kia had major injuries, while the driver had minor injuries.

Sandoval died at the hospital.

CHP said alcohol impairment is suspected to have been a factor for the Toyota driver, pending toxicology results.
