A man was killed and two others, including a 3-year-old, suffered major injuries in a crash on a Fresno highway early Sunday.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the collision at 2:25 a.m. on southbound Highway 41, near Highway 180.

CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said a 31-year-old Selma man was driving a Toyota Camry south on 41 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle stopped in the No. 2 lane.

A 33-year-old Fresno woman driving a Kia Optima south in the same lane crashed into the rear of the Toyota.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control before coming to rest in the far right and far left lanes of the highway.

A 3-year-old child riding in the Kia was restrained with a seat belt but was not secured in a child safety seat, Salas said.

The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. A man in the Kia also sustained major injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Kia had minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Alcohol impairment is suspected to have been a factor involving the Toyota driver, pending toxicology and coroner analyses, Salas said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
