Update: Man killed walking on Hwy 99 in Fresno identified. Driver suspected of DUI
California High Patrol is investigating the death of a 37-year-old man who was struck while walking in traffic on Highway 99 early Tuesday in Fresno.
A driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
CHP reported receiving multiple 911 calls around 12:45 a.m. about a pedestrian running in and out of traffic on southbound 99 near Fresno Street. Minutes later, calls reported the man had been struck.
Emergency medical personnel responded and the man was pronounced dead.
He was identified Tuesday afternoon by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Andrew Magana of Fresno.
CHP officers determined that the driver who hit the man was drunk at the time of the collision. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, but taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
It is unclear whether Magana was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, CHP said. Toxicology results are pending through the coroner’s office.
Abandoned car on Highway 99
CHP officers had already responded to an area near the crash earlier in the morning, after receiving reports that a Toyota Prius had been abandoned in the fast lane of the transition between southbound Highway 99 and Highway 180. The driver had stopped and was seen running from the car.
Officers found the car around 12:10 am. It was undamaged, with the door open and engine still running. It was removed from traffic.
In its Tuesday news release the CHP didn’t explicitly state whether the incidents were related, but later confirmed Magana had been driving the Prius and left the car before being hit.
