GameStop stores closing in Fresno area. Here’s where — and the ones still open
The start of the new year has meant the end for three GameStop stores in the Fresno area, as well as another in the South Valley that has already closed.
The GameStop at the intersection of First Street and Shields Avenue in Fresno as well as the stores in Selma and Madera will all be closing for good Jan. 14. The GameStop location in Porterville ceased operation Wednesday.
The closures highlight GameStop’s struggles of operating brick-and-mortar stores in an era when customers stream and buy more online.
“Our team would like to thank and appreciate all of our loyal customers,” the GameStop store in Selma posted on social media. “It saddens us to close our doors but we will continue to do our best to ensure everyone continues to have a great in-store experience!
“We appreciate your patience and support throughout the years.”
GameStop, which is based in Texas, has not confirmed how many stores would be closing.
A blog tracking closure updates reports that more than 200 stores impacted nationwide, including 28 California locations confirmed.
GameStop in 2024 closed nearly 600 stores, including a location at the River Park Shopping Center area and one in Sierra Vista Mall.
In 2022, a GameStop at the El Paseo Marketplace in northwest Fresno also was shut down.
By the end of next week, GameStop will have three Fresno locations and one Clovis store remaining. There are also two stores in Visalia and one in Tulare.
Because of the decline in video game purchases, GameStop stores have shifted part of their focus to operate as a collectibles store, including carrying popular Pokémon card products.
