The José Martí Awards — which honors the nation’s Latino newspapers and magazines — are the most prestigious in the Latino print world.

The winners of the 50 editorial categories in the José Martí awards were announced at the association’s annual convention last week in San Diego.

“The José Martí awards set the gold standard for Latino newspapers in the country. These awards honor the Vida en el Valle journalists who have covered the local community for 35 years,” said former Vida en el Valle editor Juan Esparza Loera, who retired this month. “We are thrilled to win these awards.”

Vida en el Valle reporter María G. Ortiz-Briones earned six awards — three gold, one silver and two bronze — in the José Martí national competition, while former Vida en el Valle editor Juan Esparza Loera won a silver in editorial column.

The publication also won a bronze award for best bilingual weekly newspaper.
