A driver escaped possible death Monday morning when his pickup truck crashed into a tree near Woodward Park.

Officers responded to the single-vehicle collision at 9:30 a.m. on Friant Road.

Police said the truck went off the right-hand shoulder between Copper and Rice Road, got back on the road sideways, went over the center divider, and wrapped around a tree.

Police said the driver was able to get out of the truck before it caught on fire. They were surprised that the driver only sustained head injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.

“He needs to go buy a lottery ticket,” an officer said.
