A man who died after his vehicle ended up in a canal July 25 has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office..

Manuel Guzman, 36, was killed when his Mercury Milan traveled off Chestnut Avenue, just north of North Avenue, into a canal. The vehicle became fully submerged.

Witnesses told officers that Guzman exited his vehicle and was calling for help while trying to stay above water. Guzman then went under water and did not resurface.

The Fresno Fire Department’s water rescue team and a helicopter arrived to find Guzman, who was located 80 feet south of the submerged vehicle by water rescue personnel.

Guzman was pulled from the canal and was pronounced dead at Community Regional Medical Center.
