Update: Coroner identifies Fresno County teen killed in ATV crash

CHP

The teen killed July 6 in an off-road ATV crash in Fresno County was identified by the coroner as 15-year-old Isaac Lopez Torres of Mendota.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 6:30 p.m. along the San Joaquin riverbed where San Mateo Avenue dead-ends, north of Highway 180.

CHP said two 15-year-old boys were riding a single Can-Am off-road ATV eastbound along the riverbank when the driver lost control.

Both teens were ejected from the ATV, crashing in the river, where the water was approximately one to two feet deep, CHP said. The ATV overturned and landed on top of the passenger, who was not wearing a helmet.

A witness at the scene lifted the ATV off the passenger and contacted his aunt.

CHP said the passenger was alert and breathing at the time.

Per the aunt’s request, the passenger was taken to a home in Mendota rather than seek immediate medical attention, CHP said.

The family later called 911 after the teen began experiencing significant internal pain. Emergency medical services responded and airlifted the teen to Community Regional Medical Center.

Torres later died, CHP said.

The driver, who was wearing a helmet, sustained minor injuries. He and his family cooperated with the investigation.

The ATV, which had already been removed from the scene, showed no visible damage, CHP said.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
