Coroner ID’s suspect who fled in hit-and-run and crashed into tree in downtown Fresno

The driver who was killed after crashing into a tree in downtown Fresno following a hit-and-run was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Monday morning.

Scott Beckwith, 44, of Fresno crashed at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Fresno and H streets.

Police said a couple were in a black SUV at P and Divisadero streets when they were rear-ended by a Chevy pickup truck.

As information was being exchanged, the truck fled the scene, police said. The couple got in their black SUV, followed the pickup and called police.

Police said the truck was driving in-and-out of lanes down the streets in downtown Fresno. The truck went southbound on H, approaching Fresno Street when Beckwith lost control and crashed into a tree.

Beckwith was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if alcohol was involved, police said.
