Driver rear-ends SUV, flees, crashes into tree and dies, Fresno police say

A man was killed Sunday morning after crashing into a tree in downtown Fresno following a hit-and-run, police said.

The crash happened at 10:30 a.m. at Fresno and H streets in downtown Fresno.

Fresno police Lt. Tim Tietjen said a couple were in a black SUV at P and Divisadero streets when they were rear-ended by a Chevy pickup truck.

As information was being exchanged, the truck fled the scene, police said. The couple got in their black SUV, followed the pickup and called police.

Tietjen said the truck was driving in-and-out of lanes down the streets in downtown Fresno. The truck went southbound on H, approaching Fresno Street when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if alcohol was involved, Tietjen said.
