Sanger man killed in crash in Fresno County canal identified by coroner

A 62-year-old man was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office after his vehicle ended up in the canal.

The incident happened at 7:10 p.m. June 21 in the area of Newmark and North avenues.

Witnesses told police they saw a man inside the vehicle before it submerged. The victim was freed from the vehicle after officers and good Samaritans went to help.

The victim, identified as Jose Lara of Sanger, was pronounced dead.

Sanger police said the incident is under investigation to determine what caused the collision and if drugs and/alcohol played a role.
