Fresno officers responded to a suspected DUI traffic collision Saturday night.

Officers responded to Floradora Avenue and Clark Street and found a car had driven off the road and into the canal just after 10:30 p.m.

The canal was full of water, police said.

Divers from the Fresno Fire Department were able to rescue a man and a woman out of the vehicle, but police said the woman drowned as she was swept away before she was pulled out of the water.

The driver — only described to be a man — was checked by the police traffic unit and is facing a DUI charge.

He was placed under arrest, police said.
