Dog shot, killed by police after biting 2 people then charging officers in Fresno

A dog was shot and killed by police officers Wednesday night after rushing towards a group in Fresno near Blackstone and McKinley avenues.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of North Glenn Avenue, just south of McKinley, at 11 p.m. regarding a loose pit bull that had attacked two people, Fresno police Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega said.

Before officers arrived, one victim left the scene in a vehicle. When they got there, they found one victim bleeding from the arm.

Trueba Vega said the wounds were caused by the victim’s rescue dog and required serious medical attention.

The dog was shot as officers attempted to take the victim to an ambulance and the pit bull returned to the front yard, began barking and was foaming at the mouth. The pit bull stalked towards the group, Trueba Vega said.

Officers requested additional help, including animal control with a dog pole.

An officer deployed used a less-lethal device in attempt to deter the animal, Trueba Vega said.

The dog ran towards the group, and one officer used their Taser on it. The dog got up and ran after the officer again who then fired three shots, killing the pit bull.

Trueba Vega said the pit bull got close to the group.

The two victims are expected to be OK. It was unclear where the other victim got bit.
