Update: 20-year-old driver killed in head-on collision ID’d by coroner

A head-on collision Thursday morning killed a driver in Fresno County.

The collision occurred at 5:10 a.m. on South Hayes Avenue near Huntsman Avenue, near Raisin City.

The California Highway Patrol said a 20-year-old man from Raisin City was driving a GMC Terrain south on Hayes when the driver allowed the vehicle to cross into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry.

The Camry was being driven northbound by a 21-year-old man from Fresno, with a 21-year-old passenger, also from Fresno.

The driver of the GMC Terrain was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, CHP said.

The driver was pronounced dead. He was identified by the coroner as Gabriel Vasquez, 20, of Raisin City.

The two in the Toyota Camry sustained moderate injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the collision, CHP said.

Investigators believe the driver of the GMC Terrain may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine whether a medical condition contributed to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
