A 35-year-old woman is in jail after she allegedly started a grass fire Sunday afternoon.

Crews responded to the fire in the area of Armstrong Avenue and Highway 180, which burned several acres of dry vegetation, prompting a large response due to its size and proximity to nearby structures.

Firefighters contained the fire before it resulted in injuries or caused damage to nearby buildings, Fresno Fire spokesperson Josh Sellers said.

Witnesses told authorities they saw a woman deliberately start the fire with a lighter.

At least 15 acres were burned, Sellers said.

Fire Investigators and the Fresno Police Department located and detained the suspect.

Crews were on scene for three hours to make sure no flareups occurred.
