A teenage student died Tuesday night following a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in Sanger.

The crash happened at 7:21 p.m. at the intersection of Bethel and Almond avenues.

Officers arrived and located a boy and girl, both 17, on the road.

The victims were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where one later died. The other was in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.

The victim has not been identified by authorities.

Sanger Unified issued a statement Wednesday morning saying the teens attended Sanger High.

“With profound sadness, we share heartbreaking news affecting our Sanger Unified family. Last night, two of our students were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. Our hearts are with both families, and we remain in close contact to offer our full support during this incredibly difficult time,” Sanger Unified wrote.

Police said the two were walking across Bethel at the intersection with Almond when they were struck by a vehicle that was traveling north on Bethel. The driver remained on the scene and was cooperative.

Counseling services are being offered at Sanger High and Sanger West and other district sites. The district said staff received guidance “on how to best support our students, and dedicated counseling spaces have been set up on each campus for those in need of additional emotional support.”

“Our entire Sanger Unified community is grieving this devastating loss. We are a strong and compassionate district, and we will stand together to support one another through this tragedy.”

The investigation is ongoing.
