A pedestrian was killed Sunday night after he was struck by a motorist near a busy intersection in Fresno.

The motorist struck the pedestrian about 10 p.m. at Blackstone and Herndon avenues near Highway 41.

Officers arrived and found the man on the sidewalk and began first aid, Fresno police Lt. Henry Garcia said.

The man was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was identified Tuesday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Gabriel Zarate, 45, of Selma.

Garcia said the pedestrian was at fault, though did not specify the reason, and the driver remained on scene, but was evaluated for DUI.

Authorities remained on scene for several hours to determine what happened by talking to witnesses and checking surveillance cameras.
