Update: Fresno man hit, killed by vehicle while in crosswalk near Fashion Fair identified

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist Monday morning in Fresno.

The collision occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at East Shaw Avenue and First Street near Fashion Fair Mall, police spokesperson Luke Tran said.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was identified Tuesday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Muhammad Akbar, 51, of Fresno.

The collision is under investigation, but Tran said DUI was not a factor in the collision and the driver remained on scene and was cooperative.

Tran added the man was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, but was unsure which direction he was crossing.

The cameras were down at the time of the collision “so we don’t know the exact cause of the collision,” Tran said.

“But due to it still being under investigation, we’ll be out for a little bit to figure out exactly what happened,” Tran said.
