Neydi Nunez was ready for Wednesday’s heat: She had water bottles, a watermelon, and a folding chair she set up next to the Kings River.

“It’s too hot,” she said, adding that although she had gone for swim, she needed another as she had “already dried up.”

The National Weather Service has updated its week’s weather forecast for Fresno, which hit a high of 107 degrees Wednesday and will remain in triple digits for the rest of the week.

Also heading to Reedley Beach was Martina Vasquez, 21, who came with her large family as they tried to stay cool. She hadn’t been swimming, but her kids had been out in the water.

“Just here enjoying the water,” she said. “It’s pretty fresh.”

The river was running better than it had been in late spring because of new releases. The Kings River Water Association began releasing water into the lower part of the river in early July to benefit farmers all the way to Riverdale.

Sixteen-year-old Samantha Arias went to the river with her family, and said she took a break from swimming to eat a cucumber sprinkled with Tajín seasoning and lemon. She planned to jump back in, as the water felt cool.

Robert Gonzales relaxed under a beach umbrella with his wife, son, daughter and dog.

“Only refreshment you get if you don’t have a pool at home,” he said of being riverside.

Anide Villa, 34, sat in the sand beneath the shade of a tree with her baby beside her, as she watched her two other children play in the water.

“It’s super hot at home,” Villa said, so she took them to the river “to chill out.” Sometimes, she said, she takes the children to Walmart or another place that had air conditioning.

Ice cream truck driver Harbans Pannu, 68, said that despite the heat, his business in the early afternoon was only so-so. People were too busy swimming to leave the cold water and get a treat, he said.

The remaining week’s temperatures will cool slightly as a surge of monsoon moisture enters California from the Southwest, with about 10% to 20% chance of precipitation on Thursday and Friday in Fresno.

Thursday should be103 degrees, with Friday cooling to 101 degrees. The triple digits continue into the weekend, as Saturday and Sunday are both predicted to be 100 degrees.
