Fresno police officer and a driver injured in a collision on Highway 180, CHP says

A Fresno police officer and a driver were injured Thursday night in a collision on Highway 180.

The collision happened around 6:12 p.m. on Highway 180, east of Chestnut Avenue when the officer was investigating a DUI-related collision.

The officer contacted the driver when another vehicle swerved and struck the back of the patrol vehicle that knocked the officer and the driver forward, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Joseph Bianchi said.

The officer and the driver were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and are expected to be OK, Bianchi said.

It’s unknown how fast the vehicle was going, but “it was a decent collision.”

The driver that struck the patrol vehicle is cooperating.

Bianchi said the officer was investigating a prior collision when one of the other vehicles fled the scene, The officer then contacted the other vehicle on the highway.

Traffic going eastbound on Highway 180 was backed up for two hours.
