A man was rescued from Millerton Lake after he jumped into the water Friday evening — without knowing how to swim and without a life jacket.

State park rangers and lifeguards were called to a drowning in progress at 6:10 p.m. at Boat Ramp 3 on the Fresno County side of the lake’s south shore, Supervising Ranger Steve Barber said.

State park lifeguards conducted a search in the area where the man was last seen and located him within a minute, making a recovery in 10 feet of water at the end of a courtesy dock.

The 21-year-old from Fresno was pulled from the water and emergency personnel performed CPR when the man regained a pulse, Barber said.

He was flown to Community Regional Medical Center. His status was not known.

Barber said the man was with his wife and she told authorities that he jumped off the courtesy dock without a life jacket in “very low visibility in the water” and that he didn’t know how to swim.

Alcohol was not suspected, Barber said.

Barber said if people are planning to go to Millerton Lake this weekend to swim near lifeguards and wear a life jacket.
