Car near Fresno leaves roadway, hits tree in fatal crash, CHP says

UPDATE: Kerman woman, 27, identified as victim in car crash into palm tree west of Fresno

A motorist was killed Monday when her car left the roadway and struck a palm tree west of Fresno, the California Highway Patrol said.

The woman was driving a Mazda 3 about 5:40 a.m. on Kearney Boulevard east of Howard Avenue before the fatal crash, according to CHP officer Mike Salas.

She allowed the Mazda to drift to the right shoulder and while trying to get back on the road overcorrected, crossing the road to the north before hitting a full-grown palm tree head-on, CHP said.

She was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she later died, CHP said.

Investigators could not immediately say if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, Salas said.
