Sheriff ID’s man who drowned at Bass Lake. He was trying to retrieve a drifting boat

A 32-year-old Mendota man who died at Bass Lake trying to retrieve a boat that had floated away from shore has been identified.

A dive team retrieved the body of Mohammed Obaid from the lake on Tuesday. The Madera County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his identity on Wednesday.

He had been in the lake for nearly a day.

The sheriff’s office was notified of a possible drowning at the Lupine Campground Day Use area of Bass Lake on Monday afternoon and began looking for Obaid. The search resumed Tuesday morning, with added resources from Fresno and Tulare counties.
