Coroner ID’s Fresno man ejected and killed in a two-vehicle crash in Madera County

The Madera County Coroner’s Office has identified the 34-year-old Fresno man who died late last Friday after being ejected from a 2016 Honda when he failed to slow down as a truck was making a left turn.

He was identified as Maurice Anastacio Maldonado of Fresno by the coroner.

CHP officers received a report about 9:15 p.m. April 21 of a two-vehicle crash on Avenue 12 and Road 35.

Authorities said Jesus Gonzalez Cardenas, 53, from Gilroy, was driving a 2017 Ford truck east on Avenue 12, west of Road 35. Cardenas slowed, coming to almost a complete stop, to make a left turn on Road 35.

Maldonado was going east in the Honda as it approached the truck. He failed to slow and the left front of the Honda struck the right rear of the truck, authorities said. Maldonado was ejected from the Honda in the crash and suffered fatal injuries.

A 29-year-old woman from Fresno who was a passenger in the Honda was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. Two passengers — an 88-year-old woman and a 56-year-old woman from Gilroy — in the truck went to Saint Agnes Medical Center with minor injuries.

It was no immediately unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to authorities. The investigation was ongoing.
