Riverdale man killed after running into path of vehicle identified by coroner

Pedestrian fatality

The 30-year-old man who was killed early Saturday after running into the roadway and being struck by a car on Mount Whitney Avenue in Fresno County has been identified.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office said 30-year-old Joseph Roberts of Riverdale was killed when the vehicle struck him about 12:40 a.m.

Officers learned the 16-year-old driver, from Riverdale, was going west on Mount Whitney west of Hayes Avenue in a 2005 Nissan 350Z when for unknown reasons, Roberts ran across the roadway in a southerly direction directly into the path of the Nissan.

The driver of the Nissan was unable to take evasive action to avoid Roberts.

The front of the Nissan struck Roberts.

Drugs or alcohol were not a factor for the teenage driver, CHP said.
