UPDATE: The Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Monday corrected the spelling of the name of the man killed while riding a scooter on Highway 99. He was Oswald Capistran, 24.

ORIGINAL STORY: A man killed on April 12 when he was struck by several cars while riding a scooter on Highway 99 near downtown Fresno was identified Wednesday by the Fresno County Coroner.

Oswald Capistron, 24, who was reported to be homeless at the time of his death, died shortly before 1 a.m as he was northbound on the Razor scooter near the Fresno Street exit.

A 34-year-old Fresno man in a 2013 Dodge Caravan struck Capistron from behind, throwing him to the ground, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver attempted to pull Capistron from the freeway, but the traffic prevented him from doing it safely, the CHP said. At least two more cars struck him as was on the ground and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Drugs and alcohol did not play any part in the accident the CHP said.
