Man killed after exiting car on Highway 99 in Madera ID’d by coroner. He’s from Illinois

Update: The Madera County Coroner’s Office said a driver who got out of his car before he was fatally struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 was an Illinois man.

He was Kelvin Cruz, 33, of Des Plaines, Illinois, the office said. Investigators initially said he was from Merced.

Original story: A Merced man was killed after getting out of his car on Highway 99 and being struck by a car north of Madera, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

For unknown reasons the 32-year-old Merced man was stopped by the center divider on Highway 99 north of Avenue 20 1/2 just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, CHP said in a news release.

The pedestrian was in the roadway as a 31-year-old Chowchilla woman approached in a 2010 Ford, CHP said.

She was unable to stop and struck him, throwing him to the roadway, CHP said. He died at the scene.

The investigation into the cause and possible contributing factors was ongoing, CHP said.
