Man struck and killed by vehicle on rainy Fresno morning identified by coroner

A man killed after he was struck by a vehicle on a rainy morning Jan. 10 was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday.

Roy Paniagua, 68, of Fresno was struck by a vehicle at 5:45 a.m. at Ashlan and Marks avenues.

The driver was traveling east on Ashlan when Paniagua walked out in front of her while she had a green light, authorities said.

The driver saw Paniagua at the last minute and tried to swerve and miss him but was unable to.

Paniagua was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he died.

The driver remained on scene and was cooperative.

Fresno police said at the time of the fatal collision, there have been three traffic fatalities in 2023 — all pedestrians.
