Woman, 81, retrieving mail hit by car near Clovis. She’s died from her injuries

An 81-year-old Clovis woman was killed when she was struck by a car Wednesday night northeast of Clovis while crossing a road to get mail from a mailbox, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The Fresno County Coroner identified her on Thursday as Mary Phister.

The collision took place about 5:30 p.m., on Del Rey Avenue near Herndon Avenue, reported CHP spokesman Mike Salas.

He said she was wearing dark clothing, making it difficult to be seen and walked into the path of a southbound Mazda 3 on Del Rey.

She suffered critical injuries from the crash and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center.

The Mazda driver was uninjured and officers at the scene determined the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
