Man killed when driver runs a stop sign near Madera, CHP says. Coroner identifies victim

A man killed on a Madera County road when another driver ran a stop sign was identified Friday by the Madera County Coroner’s Office.

A 20-year-old in a 2020 Ford Mustang was going north on Road 16, approaching a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 152 before 7 a.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver failed to stop and struck a 2016 Honda Civic on its driver’s side killing the 56-year-old driver, CHP said. The coroner ID’d him as Michael Garwel of Madera.

He was transported to Madera Community Hospital where he later died, the CHP said.

The 20-year-old had minor injuries but refused medical attention, the CHP said. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in the fatal crash.
