Sleeping man rescued from burning building near auto dealer in Fresno over the weekend

Fire crews battled a commercial fire Saturday evening in central Fresno.

The fire started around 9:45 p.m. inside a structure next to Sam’s Auto Sales, located at Olive and Abby avenues.

Fire crews knocked down the flames and, during a subsequent search of the building, found a man in his mid-30s in the rear of the structure covered up in a blanket, unaware that there was a fire, Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Brad Driscoll said.

Crews were able to rescue the man, who wasn’t injured. A two-alarm fire was called but was canceled after the man was safely moved out of the building.

“Luckily, we were able to locate this person and get him out of the building,” he said.

It is unknown what caused the fire, but the building was previously burnt twice and was “burned all the way through,” Driscoll said.

No vehicles were damaged.
