A five-alarm fire Saturday night at a historic Fresno apartment building injured two people.
The fire started at 10:45 p.m. at Belmont Avenue and Broadway at the three-story Osage Apartments, Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Brian Price said.
Fire crews received initial reports of people trapped on multiple floors. Firefighters rescued several people from the building.
Price said the two injured people were taken to the hospital with “significant amounts of burns.” He said they were rescued on the second floor on the north end of the building.
The two people were in stable condition, he said.
The number of people displaced is not known.
Several animals — including a bearded dragon — were also rescued.
The distinctive brick building with stately palm trees in front was built in 1929, according to the Local Register of Historic Resources.
Price said it’s not the first time the building had a fire. In the mid-1980s, a fire damaged the roof.
About 70 firefighters were battling the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the origin of the fire might’ve taken place in the mechanical case area in the rear of the building, Price said.
