Pedestrian killed on Highway 99 identified as Fresno woman, 21. CHP says she was in road

A pedestrian on Highway 99 in Fresno was killed when she was struck by a big rig early Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman, identified by the coroner as 21-year-old Angelica Beltran of Fresno, was in the middle lane about 1:10 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway near Olive Avenue as the Kenworth truck approached, CHP said.

CHP spokesman Mike Salas said Beltran was wearing dark clothing and was walking westbound in the No. 2 lane when for unknown reasons walked westbound and may have changed directions in front of the big rig.

The driver noticed the woman as he got close but was unable to avoid her in time, Salas said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver stopped and spoke with officers, CHP said. It was not clear why the woman was in the roadway.
