One person killed, another seriously injured in head-on crash in Fresno, CHP says

A man was killed and another was seriously injured Friday night after a head-on crash in northwest Fresno.

The collision happened at 9:05 p.m. on Fruit Avenue south of Tenaya Way. A black Scion, driven by a 57-year-old man, was traveling southbound in the No. 1 lane on Fruit while the 15-year-old driver of a black Nissan Altima was northbound on Fruit. For reasons to be determined, the Scion traveled into the northbound lane and crashed head-on with the Altima, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Joseph Bianchi said.

The man in the Scion was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver in the Altima was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Bianchi said the driver in the Scion was not wearing a seat belt, while the other driver was seat belted.

No other occupants were in the vehicles, Bianchi said.

Bianchi described the crash as a “hard impact.”

He said drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be a factor for the driver in the Altima, but the driver in the Scion is under investigation.

The roadway was closed for several hours as officers investigated the deadly crash.
