Victim identified in ponding basin drowning near Caruthers. He was swimming with his son

A Caruthers man has been identified as the father who drowned in a ponding basin, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.

The fatal incident happened about 4 p.m. Monday near Conejo and West avenues, killing Jose Carrillo, 34, the coroner’s office said.

Carrillo was with his 15-year-old son and an adult friend at a ponding basin owned by Consolidated Irrigation District of Selma, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Carrillo became fatigued as the adults and the teen were swimming and he went under the water, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s dive team recovered his body about 7 p.m., deputies said.

Officials said the ponding basin was full of water, which collected from irrigation canals. The temperature of the pool was about 75 degrees and at its deepest point is about 12 feet.
