Food truck explosion update: Man suffers second-degree burns in NE Fresno

The Fresno Fire Department continues to investigate what caused a food truck to explode Friday afternoon in central Fresno.

The Planet Vegan truck caught fire and injured two people — a man and a boy — while parked at a Chevron.

The popular food vendor — featuring a trailer towed by a pickup truck — was parked at its regular spot at the gas station at the northeast corner of Shaw Avenue and First Street.

Fresno Fire Department public information officer Jonathan Lopez said Saturday that investigators are looking into the blast. One of the propane tanks is known to have exploded.

“I’m not sure if that was the only thing,” he said.

Lopez added that the man had second degree burns to about one-third of his body. The status of the boy is unknown, Lopez said. The man is connected to Planet Vegan, according to the fire agency, but it was unclear if the boy is as well.

Photos of the aftermath show extreme damage inside and outside the trailer as well as to the pickup.

The metal sides of the food trailer peeled off on one side.

The blast sent debris flying about 200 feet to the northwest. It also broke a window on a vehicle across the street near a Chase bank branch, Fresno Fire said.

An air pump for vehicle tires and a trash can also caught fire, and a Carl’s Jr. sign near the corner was blackened. The windshield of the pickup truck was yellowed from the blast and fire.

Planet Vegan serves burgers and other vegan fast food. Its owners were not immediately available for comment Saturday afternoon.
