Popular food truck explodes in central Fresno, injuring two and sending debris flying

The Planet Vegan food truck exploded Friday afternoon, catching fire and injuring two people, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

The popular business — technically a trailer towed by a pickup truck — was parked at its regular spot at the Chevron at the northeast corner of Shaw Avenue and First Street.

It had “some sort of explosion” and caught fire, said Fresno Fire Department public information officer Jonathan Lopez.

Photos showed extreme damage inside and outside the trailer. The metal sides of the food trailer peeled off on one side.

The blast sent debris flying about 200 feet to the northwest. It also broke a window on a vehicle across the street near Chase Bank, Lopez said.

A nearby air pump for vehicle tires and a trash can caught fire. The windshield of the pickup truck was yellowed from the blast.

The cause of the explosion wasn’t immediately clear.

Lopez said there were reports of two people injured, a man and a boy, but he did not know how severely. The man was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

The boy was burned, Lopez said.

Planet Vegan is a popular business that serves vegan burgers and other vegan fast food.

The food truck was parked, but it wasn’t clear if it was serving customers or not at the time of the fire.

Planet Vegan’s owners were not immediately available for comment.
