Fresno, central San Joaquin Valley brace for more triple-digit weather. What to know

Fresno County, and the central San Joaquin Valley in general, will see triple-digit heat by the end of the week.

Fresno experienced its first 100-degree day of the year right before Memorial Day weekend, and temperatures are forecasted to rise again.

Jerald Meadows, a meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Hanford, said temperatures would reach 100 to 103 degrees by next weekend, with Saturday expected to be the hottest day.

“This is a pretty typical June in the San Joaquin Valley,” he said.

Meadows advised people to pay attention to the forecast and plan accordingly for outdoor activities. Wear sunscreen, hydrate, and wear loose-fitting clothes to allow your body to breathe.

Vulnerable groups and the elderly should follow the same advice, he said, but should also look for an alternative location to stay cool if they don’t have air-conditioning at home.

An important reminder, Meadows said, is for people to check the backseats of their vehicles if they have children. The interior of a car can get 25 to 30 degrees hotter, and it can happen very quickly — in a matter of 15 to 20 minutes.

“One (child) is too many,” he said of instances where people have left children in their cars.
