Fresno’s mini-heat wave will peak Wednesday, but what about Memorial Day weekend?

Fresno will experience the first 100-degree day of the year Wednesday, but the one-day heatwave should be gone by the start of the Memorial Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The thermometer is expected to hit 102 degrees on hump day, according to Jeffrey Barlow of the weather service in Hanford. The hot weather will be accompanied by a decline in air quality, prompting a warning of unhealthy outdoor conditions for sensitive groups.

The Fresn record for May 25 is 102 recorded in 1890. Tuesday’s high was 97.

By Thursday, a cooling trend carried by Pacific Northwest breezes should flow into the central San Joaquin Valley, said Barlow. Expect to see winds of 10 to 15 mph on Thursday, with a high of 99, and on Friday, with a high of 92. There will be gusts to 20 mph at times. There is no chance that rain showers will accompany the winds, he added.
