Update: Two fatalities in rural Fresno County crash involving two vehicles, sheriff says

Update: Two people were killed in the crash in rural Fresno County. One died at the scene and another person died at Community Regional Medical Center. The Coroner’s Office said Tuesday that both people have not yet been positively identified.

Original story: One person was killed, and two others suffered major injuries in a collision in rural Fresno County on Memorial Day.

The cause of the two-vehicle crash remained under investigation late Monday, but California Highway Patrol investigators said it appears one of the vehicles may have blown past a stop sign, causing the collision.

Officers responded at 4:57 p.m. to the intersection at East South Avenue and South Cherry Avenue near Easton, south of Fresno.

A passenger in a Mitsubishi pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the pickup suffered unspecified major injuries, according to CHP Officer Justin Zahariades.

The driver and a passenger in the second vehicle, a Toyota sedan, suffered minor injuries and another passenger suffered major injuries.

“There was a child in one of the vehicles that didn’t sustain any injuries, was probably seat-belted in a car seat,” Zahariades said.

Zahariades said it did not appear that either drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, but they were still to follow up with the driver at the hospital.
