Man impeded Fresno firefighters putting out flames, they said. Here’s what police said

Residents of a southeast Fresno home will be displaced after a fire Monday that may also end with an arrest, according to public safety officials.

A 911 call came in about 7 a.m. for flames coming from a home on Townsend Avenue east of Ninth Street, which is southwest of Butler and Cedar avenues, according to Battalion Chief Bob Camp.

Initial reports said people may have been inside, but crews arrived to find the home empty and the garage showing a significant blaze, Camp said.

As firefighters went to work on the flames, a man began impeding them, Camp said. The man is believed to be a resident of the home.

The man was detained and may be arrested, according to police on scene. A clinician responded to the scene to assess the man’s mental health.

Crews were able to put the fire out but it did significant damage to the garage and attic, Camp said.

Electrical wires also fell into water puddles in the backyard, which posed a danger to fire crews, Camp said.

No injuries were reported, he said.
