Bicyclist killed in morning collision that closed parts of major Fresno intersection
UPDATE: As of about 10 a.m. the intersection of Herndon and Blackstone avenues was clear, police said.
A 74-year-old man was killed while riding his bicycle across a major north Fresno intersection on Tuesday morning, police said.
The man was riding south on Blackstone Avenue and was in the crosswalk when an SUV going east on Herndon Avenue struck him, according to Fresno Police Department Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega.
The crash occurred just before 5:30 a.m. It was dark at the time and it was unclear if the driver had the right of way, Trueba Vega said. The driver of the SUV involved in the crash remained on scene and was cooperating with investigators.
The bicycle remained in the roadway more than an hour after the crash, while officers investigated the scene. Police diverted traffic in both directions on Herndon and Blackstone.
This was the 19th traffic-related fatality in 2022, Trueba Vega said. There had been 32 deaths at this same point last year.
In January, 61-year-old Paul Moore was killed while riding a recumbent-style bicycle at Friant Road and East Audubon Drive near Fresno’s Woodward Park. The death drew attention to the dangers of walking and riding in the area, which the city began working to address.
