Man killed after driving 100 mph, hitting a big rig and going under it, CHP says

A man was killed Monday south of Fresno in a suspected drunken driving crash with a big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash near Elm and North avenues occurred about 2:45 a.m. when a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis hit the big rig, and went underneath it, CHP said.

The driver of the Mercury was traveling north on Elm Avenue at speeds near 100 mph, approaching North Avenue, CHP said.

The big rig was leaving a private driveway onto North Avenue and the driver of the Mercury could not stop before the collision, according to officers.

CHP said officers suspect alcohol to have been a factor for the man driving the Mercury.

Elm Avenue near Central and North avenues was shut down as crews worked to clear the scene, CHP said.
